Why is C E Ferulic so popular?

C E Ferulic has won 35 different beauty awards since it was brought to the market in 2005.

Here are just a few:

So how did this Vitamin C serum reach star status? Read on to find out.

Vitamin C in C E Ferulic

Vitamin C is one of the most essential and well studied antioxidants. Unfortunately, not all vitamin C skin care products are effective. Some products don’t deliver vitamin C into the skin in an amount needed to work. Others don’t chemically convert to the active form of vitamin C in the skin. We know these things because of clinical tests done on live skin. The most widely accepted medical testing measures the penetration of whole molecules, not fragments of vitamin C molecules.

There are many antioxidants used in skin care products, but most aren’t able to penetrate the skin. Vitamin C / pure L-ascorbic acid is unstable, but when properly formulated, it does penetrate the skin. Derivatives of vitamin C, including ascorbyl palmitate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, don’t penetrate skin as whole molecules. One study even found that ascorbyl palmitate may intensify skin damage after sun exposure.

Vitamin C Products Need 3 Things to Penetrate Skin:

1. The formulation has to be acidic with a pH lower than 3.5.

Vitamin C formulations with a pH greater than 3.5 are not able to penetrate skin. They are unstable and, when exposed to light, become oxidized. The oxidation turns them into a new form of vitamin C called Dehydro Ascorbic Acid – and this turns the formulation yellow. By maintaining a pH of less than 3.5, the stability of Vitamin C is maintained. At this pH, the ionic charge is removed from the molecule and it is able to penetrate the outer layer (stratum corneum) of the skin.

2. The formula must have a high enough concentration of L - Ascorbic Acid.

A 10 - 20% concentration of vitamin C is effective on skin. The effectiveness is proportional to the concentration, but only up to 20%. C E Ferulic contains 15% pure vitamin C.

3. The formula must have a demonstrated biological effect on skin.

An antioxidant formulation is only as powerful as its activity in skin. The most accurate way to measure antioxidant performance is by analyzing key biomarkers - biological indicators of a process taking place in the body. The C E Ferulic antioxidant formula has been proven to reduce several key biomarkers including thymine dimers, p53 induction, and redness / sunburn. (Both thymine dimers and p53 protein levels increase after DNA damage.) C E Ferulic has been proven to reduce the occurrence of DNA mutations associated with the formation of skin cancer.

SkinCeuticals, the maker of C E Ferulic, always does clinical testing on final formulations and real people to ensure their effectiveness. The studies always include third-party laboratories, dermatologist research organizations, and members of the medical and scientific communities to validate test methods.

Studies have shown that ascorbic acid decreases skin water lossIt increases collagen formation in your skin, lightens dark spots, and improves inflammation.

Another study showed that, after 6 months of use, there was a significant increase in skin density and a decrease in deep furrows (wrinkles). There was also evidence of elastic tissue repair. In each study, vitamin C was well tolerated.

The Antioxidants in C E Ferulic are Combined for Increased Effectiveness.

Antioxidants help protect skin from free radicals. Sun and pollution damage skin molecules, and in turn, cause signs of premature aging. Unfortunately, not all antioxidants work well together. SkinCeuticals research has shown that specific combinations of antioxidants, when effectively formulated, perform better together. They have far superior results than these same antioxidants alone.

  • 1% Alpha Tocopheral / Vitamin E is an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals at the epidermal level. It replaces lipids in the epidermis to help maintain skin hydration.
  • 0.5% Ferulic Acid is another antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals. It increases the stability of vitamin C and reduces redness.

C E Ferulic Protects Against Sunburn Sunburn and redness are skin's inflammatory response to UV radiation from the sun. C E Ferulic increases skin's natural ability to protect itself from the sun. The combination of vitamins C and E doubles the photoprotection of vitamin C alone. The addition of ferulic acid doubles the photoprotection again to give skin 8 x its natural sun protection.

Application:  C E Ferulic should be applied to dry skin. In the morning after cleansing and toning, apply 4 - 5 drops to your face, neck and chest. Once the serum is absorbed, it can’t be washed or rubbed off. It is effective for a minimum of 72 hours. And remember, ALWAYS start new products one at a time, about a week apart, to make sure you don't get a reaction.

C E Ferulic extends your skin's natural ability to tolerate sun exposure. It is meant to be used with sunscreen - it is not a substitute.

Following is part of an article, The Skin Care Products You Shouldn't Buy at a Drugstore, by Lisa Fogarty for SheKnows.com. In the article, Dr. Michael J. Brown, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon at The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery, talks about the benefits of buying a stabilized vitamin C:

"Vitamin C can make your skin glow, boost collagen and act as a line of defense against fine lines and wrinkles, but you’ll get a lot more out of everyone’s favorite vitamin if you splurge on a higher quality product or ask your doctor for a recommendation. "The vitamin C products are probably the biggest waste because most are oxidized once the product is opened and they lose their effectiveness very quickly,” Brown says. "So the cheaper vitamin C (less stable) products available OTC are something I would not recommend buying. The stabilized versions are more expensive.”

Lisa Fogarty, the author of the SheKnows article agrees. In the article she says:

"Speaking from personal experience, SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic may be pricier, but it’s stabilized thanks to the addition of ferulic acid and vitamin E — and worth every penny."

Honestly, I couldn't agree more. This stuff is so good that I use it myself and put it on my kids too! Hope you like it as much as I do!
